Water~Stone Review is a literary annual published by the Hamline University Creative Writing Programs. The review publishes work in all genres as well as essay/reviews and writers’ interviews.

The ‘Water~Stone,’ known in alchemy as the ‘Philosopher’s Stone,’ was composed of the four elements of earth, fire, air and water. The stone was supposed by alchemists to possess the property of changing base metals into gold, the most perfect of all metals. It was thought to combine within itself matter and spirit, or body and soul: a union of opposites in perfect harmony.

Students currently enrolled in Hamline’s MFA or BFA programs cannot submit to Water~Stone Review. Work from graduates of these programs is welcome.

My name is Davi Gray (they/she); I am a queer, trans, nonbinary poet, writer, performer, artist, activist, and abolitionist. I live in North Minneapolis (Bde Óta Othúŋwe), on unceded lands of the Dakota and Ojibwe.

I have work published or forthcoming in Poetry, Water~Stone Review, Hayden's Ferry Review, Rogue Agent, and elsewhere; won Honorable Mention in the 2023 Muriel Craft Bailey Poetry contest; and have won prizes in multiple genres in PEN America Prison Writing Contests. I can often be found performing poetry at open mics and events around the Twin Cities.

Gray is a poet, writer, performer, artist, activist, and abolitionist; queer, trans, nonbinary, transfeminine; currently working as a writer, spoken-word performer, and part-time organizer building bridges between writers & other artists leaving incarceration and arts and social-justice-oriented people and organizations.
Gray spent several years incarcerated, and has worked as a tutor, prison newspaper editor, software developer, and airborne infantry soldier.
They have been published in Poetry magazine, Water~Stone Review, Hayden's Ferry Review, and elsewhere, and have won several prizes in PEN America Prison Writing contests. She has a bachelor's degree in computer science from Hawaii Pacific University.
