The Menu is a new online space for flash fiction, prose poetry, hybrid work and strange little things that probably shouldn’t work but somehow do. We like writing that feels alive, emotionally alert and slightly dangerous.

The Menu is a new online space for very short fiction from Glasgow-based contemporary art group Durty Beanz. Alongside open submissions, issues will feature invited contributions from established writers whose work has appeared in leading literary journals, magazines and presses.

The Menu emerges from our ongoing practice working across public art, digital media, text and contemporary culture, and is intended as a space for writing that feels emotionally, socially and aesthetically alert to the tittle-tattle of being here now.

We’re interested in writing that feels alive rather than overcooked. Work that understands contemporary life not as a concept but as a texture. We like emotional precision, humour, awkwardness, vulnerability, public life, cultural debris, strange objects and tonal instability.

Submissions are now open for Season 2. We’re interested in flash fiction, micro fiction, prose poetry, hybrid work, fragments, strange little monologues, and things that probably shouldn’t work but somehow do. Anything up to 500(ish) words.<div><br></div><div>Have a butchers through Season 1 to get a feel for what' tickles our fancy. Generally speaking though, food is a good starting point. So are pickles, art, technology, boredom, supermarkets, labour, salamanders, super soakers, Arrakis, weird jobs, Sporty Spice, Wotists, soggy socks, takeaways, Mortal Kombat characters, loneliness, Toilet Duck, Brahms, smelly foyers, scratchcards and very act of writing itself. Tell us about funny things that are sad, and sad things that are funny.</div><div><br></div><div>We'll aim to get back to you within 4-weeks of your submission date.</div>
