Palette Poetry is an online literary journal that endeavors to uplift and platform emerging and established poets.

Our mission is to create a nourishing and brave space for poetic voices, whether new, emerging, or established, especially those that often go unheard or unrecognized. Our goal is to recognize and publish the most innovative and exciting poetry we can.

Palette firmly believes writers should be compensated for their work and is a paying market. We pay $50 per poem accepted. We do not charge fees for Featured Poetry submissions and offer a quick-response submission option for writers of historically marginalized identities. All creative work published in Palette comes through our submission windows; we do not solicit poetry whether for Featured Poetry or for our contests.

Palette Poetry

Submissions for our Featured Poetry category are open year-round to poets at any stage of their careers. We highly encourage new and emerging poets to submit.We are thrilled to offer significant payment to our partner poets: $50 per poem, up to $150. We are proud to be paying for published pieces but will be highly selective in our choices for publication.We also warmly invite under-represented and marginalized writers to submit. Our aim is to be an accurate representation of the diversity of our beautiful community. Your voice is valued here.  Submissions are open internationally, to any poet writing in English—other languages are okay to include, as long as the poem is largely in English.  Please do NOT include your name or identifying information anywhere within your packet of poems. We do not read submissions anonymously but prefer identifying information to be included in the cover letter, not the packet of poems.   We accept simultaneous submissions, but please send us a note if your work is picked up elsewhere (we want to say congrats!)  Submission must be no more than 5 poems and must not exceed 10 pages.  We do not accept multiple submissions. Please submit all your poems in ONE document.  Please include a cover letter with your publication history, if any.  Expect around 3 months for a response. Please do not ask for an update on your submission until four months have passed.

To wrap up 2025 and welcome in 2026, we at Palette Poetry will be running our inaugural Rejection Poetry Prize! 
Rejection is a universal experience that all writers must face in their career. It is valid to feel disappointed, or even gut-wrenched, when the work we pour our hearts into is turned away (once again). But how we proceed after being rejected—our actions and attitude—is what defines us as writers. The aim with this prize is to reframe rejection as a stepping stone in your poem’s journey. Every journal or magazine you submit to, every rejection you receive, every time you make an effort to put your art out into the world, you are building towards a masterpiece that grows ever more saturated in actuality.
We are ecstatic to announce Mai Der Vang as our judge for this prize. Mai Der Vang is the author of Primordial (Graywolf Press, 2025), Yellow Rain (Graywolf Press, 2021), and Afterland (Graywolf Press, 2017). Her honors include the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize from the Academy of American Poets, an American Book Award, finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry, the First Book Award from the Academy of American Poets, among others. The recipient of a Guggenheim and Lannan Literary Fellowship, she teaches in the MFA Program in Creative Writing at Fresno State and currently serves as the Endowed Chair in Creative Writing at Texas State University.
“I could start by listing every trite piece of wisdom there is about rejection, from ‘it happens to everyone’ to ‘it keeps you humble’ to ‘it’s not personal,’ but I’ll spare you. While these things may be true, perhaps the most important consideration is what you choose to do with the experience of having been rejected. Does it compel you back to the page to bring a fire you hadn’t yet felt, or does it make you retreat from the page altogether? I would love to see poems that redefine what rejection means to you, or poems that have moved out of dormancy and are ready to be re-received by the world. I want poems that you stand by and put your faith in because you know they deserve a home. That said, there is already enough to feel excluded from and rejected by in our current world. Don’t let rejection dishearten you in the short term. Writing is about building up stamina for the long game, and there is so much more beautiful work ahead.”

Submissions are open from December 8, 2025 – February 8, 2026. Palette’s editors will choose the ten finalists and any honorable mentions that warrant extra attention. Our judge will then select the winner and runners-up for publication. The winner will be awarded $3,000, publication, and a brief interview in Palette Poetry. Second and third place will receive $300 and $200, respectively, as well as publication. Finalists may also be considered for publication in our Featured Poetry category.

As summer reaches full swing, we invite you to use those scenic views by participating in our upcoming Ekphrastic Poetry Prize! Ekphrastic poems offer a writer's unique perspective and perception of a specific work of art, breathing new life into it. We're excited to welcome Divya Victor as our judge, so please join us in contemplating established images like "Café Terrace at Night" by Vincent van Gogh, Andy Warhol's "Untitled from Flowers," and Frida Kahlo portraits, or your favorite film, the sculptures in your local park, or even reinventing your own images! Whether you choose to interpret a painting or create your own narrative from a found photograph, we encourage you to send your ekphrastic poems our way!

Divya Victor (b. 1983) is a Tamil-American poet, essayist, and educator. She is the author of CURB (Nightboat Books), which won the 2022 PEN America Open Book Award and the 2022 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award. It was also a finalist for the 2022 CLMP Firecracker Award (Poetry). Her next book, KIN, a collection of essays, is due out from Graywolf in 2027. She is the recipient of a 2025 Creative Capital Award for this work.
Divya is also the author of KITH (Fence Books/ Book*hug); Scheingleichheit: Drei Essays (Merve Verlag, trans. Lena Schmidt), NATURAL SUBJECTS (Trembling Pillow), UNSUB (Insert Blanc), and THINGS TO DO WITH YOUR MOUTH (Les Figues). Her work has been collected in numerous venues, including BOMB, the New Museum’s The Animated Reader, Crux: Journal of Conceptual Writing, The Best American Experimental Writing, POETRY, The Yale Review, American Poetry Review, The Atlantic, The New York Times Magazine, W.W. Norton’s The Seagull Reader, and boundary2.
She is an Associate Professor of English and Writing at Michigan State University, where she was the recipient of the institution’s Teacher-Scholar Award (2023) and its exclusive nominee for the Michigan Association of State Universities Distinguished Professor of the Year Award in both 2024 and 2025. Here, she is the Director of the Creative Writing Program.

Ekphrastic Poetry Prize

As summer comes to a close, Palette is excited to announce the 2026 Spilled Ink Challenge, a call for poets to share their raw, confessional, and accidental poems. From September 14 to September 27, we welcome emerging and established poets to submit poems that gnaw at the raw and vulnerable parts of the human experience, those secrets that weren’t meant to be spilled. Take inspiration from Anne Sexton’s epitomizing confessions in Love Poems, Larry Levis’s Winter Stars collection on family estrangement and grief, the articulate rage of Frank Bidart’s Watching the Spring Festival, or Louise Glück’s Winter Recipes from the Collective for stream of consciousness pondering on life, love, and death. We look forward to reading your poetic experimentations, your meditations on the difficult questions of life, your lamentations of lost love, and everything in between. One winner, chosen by Palette’s editors, will be awarded $500 and publication in Palette Poetry.
