An anthology imprint publishing fiction and poetry set inside traditional myths and legends.

Myths & Legends is a new anthology imprint from Hearth Stories magazine. It will focus on settings and characters out of myth and legend and each anthology will contain new stories featuring beloved characters and settings, new tellings of traditional stories, as well as new translations of existing sources (where applicable).

Like Hearth Stories, the anthologies released by Myths & Legends will be released as high quality ebooks in multiple formats: EPUB3 (General), AZW3 (Kindle), KEPUB (Kobo), and PDF. Works featured in anthologies from Myths & Legends will contain more action, danger, and adventure than typical Hearth Stories works, while hopefully retaining some of the cozy charm that typifies Hearth Stories works.

Generally speaking we have a single submission call at a time for a given setting/theme/myth/legend. We publish short stories, novelettes, and poetry. The poetry should be narrative poetry (it should tell a story). We pay a flat rate detailed in our submission guidelines, rather than a per word rate.

We request that submissions work within the timeline and physical location of the original myths and legends, but there is a lot of room to play around with ideas and we are open to, for example, gender swapped characters, new characters, queer retellings, etc. Have fun with it and make it your own!

See individual submission calls for details of what we are currently looking for, or visit our website.

Myths & Legends: A Hearth Stories Anthology Imprint

This is a submission call for an anthology of stories based in the world and legends of Robin Hood. The stories do not have to feature Robin Hood, but should be firmly set within the world and time period of the legend, using any existing characters you like, or adding your own.

If you are only loosely aware of the Robin Hood legends: no worries! The Robin Hood Wikipedia article has a lot of great information that can get you going. You don't have to be a historian, British cultural expert, or Robin Hood super-fan to participate. If you have an inclination to give a story or poem a whirl, we would love to hear from you!

The Gren-Wode

We are not exactly taking illustration submissions. Instead, we are accepting portfolio submissions (a link is fine in this case) to see if we can find an artist to work on a few illustrations for the book as a whole.

We are looking for classic book illustration; black on white line drawing. Here are two examples (both from books intended for younger readers, but the style is more or less what we are going for, if not the subjectmatter): 1, 2.
