MIT Technology Review

MIT Technology Review publishes a wide range of stories, from breaking news to long-term investigations. We want stories about technology itself, but we’re particularly excited about those areas where technology and humans collide—where technology meets the real world. Our stories should feel like must-reads for people who want to stay up to date with how technology is changing our world. 

In general, we commission news stories (generally 800-1,000 words), analysis pieces (800-1,000 words), and features (2,500-4,000 words) from freelancer journalists for the website. In addition to news and features, the print magazine offers other potential formats for stories, including infographics and data spreads, reported essays, short profiles, and book essays. Pitching for print

In addition to our online coverage, MIT Technology Review publishes a bimonthly print magazine.

The front of the book consists of short news stories with some shelf life (500-800 words); “Job titles of the future” (400-600 words); and profiles (1200-1500 words). In the back of the book we run reported essays; book essays that round up 3-4 books on a theme; and photo-led behind-the-scenes stories called Field Notes (here are two examples). None of these types of articles need to be tied to the theme of the issue, and you can pitch them whenever you’d like.

The feature well of the magazine is devoted to narrative features, investigations, big profiles, and reported essays (generally between 2500-4000 words) centered around the theme of the issue.

Here are some of the upcoming feature themes for 2026, along with rough deadlines for pitches:

Jan/Feb: Breakthroughs [includes our annual round-up of high-impact innovations, pitches due mid-late July/early August]
March/April: Crime [pitches due mid Sept 2025]
May/June: Nature [pitches due mid-to-late November 2025]
July/August: Engineering [pitches due mid-to-late Jan 2026]
September/October: Kids [pitches due mid-to-late March 2026]
