Publishing since 2010, The Lyre is an annual literary journal, supported by Simon Fraser University's Department of World Languages and Literatures. We accept poetry, prose, short stories, photography, artwork, and translations. The scope of The Lyre broadly encompasses how the world is pieced together through language and literature; we are especially interested in diverse expressions of multilingualism, multiculturalism, and how culture is lived through writing and artwork. 

The lyrebird we are named after is a poised mimic, and in its call incorporates the resonances of the world that surrounds it. Yet, its intention is not to blend, but to challenge. The sounds it reproduces are beyond that of other birds, other machines, and rather than simple reproduction, its songs tells that it cannot be bested. Like the bird, we amplify the diverse and magnetic emerging literary voices from Simon Fraser University and beyond.

What is "FLUX"?

Through the lens of your camera, city-lights flicker; but as the shutter snaps, the stills are static, intimate, and drenched in colour. Screens flash. The highway rushes. The scene shifts before you can capture it.

“FLUX” is a state of constant change, movement, transfer, and flow. But it is also chemical, a substance which brings two things together in fusion. With this issue, we invite you to explore the complexities of an ever-changing world. Are things always uncertain? Or is there comfort in the ephemerality of the world? This year, we’re looking for writing and art that speaks to the surreal, the cosmic, the beauty and the distress of impermanence.

All accepted submissions will be featured in our 17th annual print publication this fall.
