GARDEN OF THOUGHTS

For our March 2026 issue, we are looking for poems written in the elegant form of the Rondeau, a form born in medieval France and carried throughout centuries by poets.

Originating in the 13th century as a lyrical song form, the Rondeau was later refined into one of the most recognisable fixed forms in French poetry. In its classic structure, it consists of 15 lines, written with just two (or three) rhymes, with a refrain drawn from the opening line that returns at pivotal moments in the poem. Its traditional rhyme scheme is:

aabba aabR aabbaR

In English, the Rondeau has been embraced and adapted while maintaining its essential architecture. It is a form of circling, of thought returning altered, deepened, sharpened.
